Listen to Us!

Week Four
With only one week left in camp we had a lot of work to do to prepare for our art exhibition. But that did not stop us from having fun.

Two phrases were chosen by the students this week to express their thoughts. These words will become part of an installation placed on the site. The phrases were: Listen to Us and Underestimated.
They painted the letters in creative ways. You can visit the installation in the orchard.

The work was serious.

The results were detailed and beautiful.

My favorite artists are Monet and Warhol. I like how Monet uses nature and Warhol uses color. --Serena

Something I learned here at the Frick is that sometimes less is more.

Our visiting artist Leslie Ansley was on hand to guide the creativity.

Let them eat cake!

Week Three

One project used a real layer cake to show perspective.
We drew and painted our own cakes.
YUMMY!

Over in the Art Museum we made jewelry from our own handmade beads.

When we're not making art, we're often looking at the collections ...

...and doing some writing.

Some thoughts this week:

My favorite project was the hubcaps. My least favorite project was the paint with the cave men thing. I'm looking forward to making a clay project. Cheyenne

My favorite project was to make stained glass. I'm proud of the work I made and I know others will be, too. I want to grow up and become the USA's #1 artist. I want people to love and probably even buy my art pieces. I love the teachers here. I love my friends here, and I'm super happy to be here. Curtis

My favorite project was making bracelets with homemade beads. I liked it because of my inspiration: my best friend. Everytime I braided the strings I thought of her. Alleah

Chemistry of Color!

Week Two
Thousands of years ago people made paint by mixing egg and water with natural materials such as clay and charcoal. Today we did the same. Check out the process below.

Some thoughts on this type of paint:

This paint is very rocky--Anthony
I feel sorry for the people that had to use this paint long ago--Mya
This is an interesting project because I have never done this before and it is also interesting because this is how people did this long ago--Cheyenne
I think that they liked this paint because it was all they knew. If you have never tasted chocolate, you don't miss it--Allie (I am Allie with an ie...I am not a street)
It stinks, like eggs I think--Jaread
This paint feels like maple syrup--Ethan

The results are amazing.

Take a look at some other projects we have been working on this week.

Off to a Running Start
Week One

Welcome to Our Blog

Check us out each week to find out what the amazing campers from Summer Dreamers Academy have to say about their experiences making art and exploring history at the Frick Art & Historical Center.

Campers explored line, shape, color & texture transferring designs onto plexiglass for a stained glass effect. The results were fantastic. The students are enjoying the results of their work and getting to know each other. Can't wait for Week Two!

Ethan: I liked doing the stained glass because of it being colorful. This was a fun process. I liked painting the colors.

Autumn liked her outdoor project on Wednesday even more than the stained glass. "I liked putting the flowers together and making nature look good."

Curtis: I started with simple shapes and the picture started to show up. Then all I needed to do was complete it. I like to draw. I keep drawing materials in my pack so I can draw anywhere.
